Indian captain Shubman Gill picked two major differences between Ashish Nehra and Gautam Gambhir as coaches.
Shubman Gill, who recently became the Gujarat Titans' captain, has been spending time with Ashish Nehra since the day he was drafted into the team’s inaugural season. Meanwhile, Gill was associated with Gautam Gambhir back in the KKR days and is now leading the Indian team coached by Gambhir.
Hands-On Nehra, Determined Gambhir – Gill on What Sets Them Apart
Speaking on Sky Sports with Dinesh Karthik, Shubman Gill was asked to pick the difference between the two coaches he has worked with. Shubman highlighted that there are plenty of differences in the coaching styles of Nehra and Gambhir.
“It will be fun,” Gill said. “Ashu pa (Nehra) is very, like you said, very hands-on, very animated, and very expressive in terms of his personality. And your personality kind of reflects on your coaching style as well. So he’s very expressive. Whereas Gautam is very determined, very committed.”

When Shubman Gill was asked how he adapted to different coaching styles, he added that though both have different approaches, the destination remains the same with a common goal.
“And I think Gautam bhai focuses more on the kind of attitude or the mindset that he requires from the team or the players. They’re very different personalities, but at the end of the day, you’re all working towards a common goal. The paths might be different, but you’re trying to reach the same destination,” Gill noted.
“One Session at a Time”: Gill on India’s England Test Prep
Shubman Gill was also asked about England’s bowling resources and how his team plans to target specific options. He explained that both the Indian batting lineup and England’s bowling attack are relatively inexperienced, which creates a balance. He emphasized taking things one session at a time.
“Our batting order is relatively inexperienced, and their bowling attack is relatively inexperienced. So I think there’s a good balance there. And we want to play each game or each session as it is... So it’s all about what’s happening in that situation or in that condition,” Gill said.

Gill Reflects on Takeaways from 2018 and 2021 England Series
Finally, Gill was asked about the previous series versus England, especially the last two—4-1 in 2018 and 2-2 in 2021. He highlighted the positives from those tours and said they were helpful for understanding how England plays.
“I looked at the previous couple of series because that’s relatively more relevant, more closer to how we are going to play or to how the England team plays. And that’s what I looked at. I think it’s very important to take that confidence into this series because I personally feel that we had two very good series. We might not have won those series, but there were a lot of positives that we took from that series,” Gill concluded.
